Where does the Bible say the lion will lie down with the lamb? - Isaiah 11:6 (2023)

Biblical question:

Do you want to know where in the Bible it says that the lion will lie down with the lamb?

Bible answer:

In Christ's 1,000-year reign on earth, there will be peace between animals and humans. There are a number of passages in Scripture that describe this period. Isaiah 11:1-6 says it comes some time after Jesus' first appearance, or after his birth, death, return to life, and ascension. But Isaiah 11:6 saysWill the lion lie down with the lamb?Does it say "and peace shall reign in the kingdom, and the lion shall lie down with the lamb"? The future time of peace described at Isaiah 11:1-6 will come when Christ returns (Isaiah 9:6-7; 65:20). It is a time of peace, long life and joy.

Where does the Bible say the lion will lie down with the lamb? - Isaiah 11:6 (1)

Isaiah 11:6 describes the peace in the millennial kingdom

Imagine the animal kingdom existing in peace with other animals and humans. Isaiah 11:6 reports that

And the wolf will dwell with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the kid, and the calf, and the lion cub, and the fattened cattle together; and a boy will lead them. Isaiah 11:6 (NIV)

Isaiah 65:25 is another Old Testament passage that is similar but not relatedThe lion will lie down with the lamb. It is said that "the wolf and the lamb shall feed together."

“The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox; and the dust shall be food for the serpent. In all my holy mountain they shall neither harm nor destroy, says the LORD. Isaiah 65:25 (NIV)

(Video) Was the phrase "Lion and Lamb" changed in Isaiah 11:6?

But there are no scriptures that refer to the lamb and the lion lying together. This is a very common misconception.

Isaiah 11:6 has not changed

Every historical document that refers to Isaiah 11:6 does not say, "The lion will lie down with the lamb." They do not refer to the lion and the lamb. They say thatthe wolf and the lamb will feed together.” What follows are six historical examples of information showing that Isaiah 11:6 never reads, “The lion will lie down with the lamb.” They always refer to the wolf and the lamb.

The Hebrew Bible - The Tanakh

The first example of Isaiah 11:6 is from the Hebrew Bible. It is identical to our English Bibles.

And the wolf will dwell with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the kid, and the calf, the young lion, and the fat animal together; And a little boy will lead them. Isaiah 11:6 (The Tanakh)[1]

The Hebrew word translated "wolf" isforget. Occurs seven times in the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament (Genesis 49:27; Isaiah 11:6; 65:25; Jeremiah 5:6; Ezekiel 22:27; Habakkuk 1:8; Zephaniah 3:3). Each time it is translated as wolf because that is the meaning of the Hebrew word. It is never translated lion. Therefore, Isaiah 11:6 does not refer to the lion and the lamb.

1611 King James Bible

The second important example is the 1611 King James Bible. It should be noted that Isaiah 11:6 in the 1611 King James Version Bible is the same as in modern Bibles. Here is Isaiah 11:6 in the 1611 KJV:

The wolf will also dwell with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the kid, the calf and the young lion and the fattened cattle together, and a child will lead them. 1611 King James Bible [2]

This shows that Isaiah 11:6 has not changed since the King James Bible was printed in 1611.

Early Church Fathers(349-407 n. Chr.)

A review of the early church scriptures shows that John Chrysostom paraphrases Isaiah 11:6 in his commentary on the "Gospel of Matthew." It is important to note that Chrysostom lived around AD 349-407. Here is his paraphrase of part of Isaiah 11:6:

Then wolves and lambs graze together. . .[3]

Saint Ambrose (AD 340-397) also refers to the feeding of wolves and lambs together.[4] The itemIsaiah 11:6 once said that the lion should lie down with the lamb?contains a more complete list of the writings of the early church fathers that quote Isaiah 11:6. Each of the quotes contains the phrase "wolf and lamb."

Der Pseudepigraph(2nd to 7th century AD)

ÖSibylline Oracles(2nd to 7th centuries AD), which is part of thePseudo-Epigraph, reformulates and plagiarizes the verse without acknowledging the original source of Isaiah 11:6.

On the mountain wolves and lambs will eat grass together. Leopards will eat with children.[5]

Dead Sea Scrolls(c. 125 BC)

The 1QIsa (~125 BC) scroll in the Scrolls of the Dead also contains the Book of Isaiah and Isaiah 11:6 states that the wolf and the lamb will be together and not a lion and a lamb.[6]

The Septuagint(3rd to 2nd centuries BC)

ÖSeventy(3rd to 2nd centuries BCE), the Greek version of the Hebrew Bible, contains Isaiah 11:6. What follows is a translation of the Greek text,

And the wolf will feed with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the kid. . .[7]

(Video) In Isaiah 11:6, I thought it was the lion will lay with a lamb, but my Bible says it is a wolf?

So this means that Isaiah 11:6 has been around since at least 270 B.C. has not changed. The reader is also encouraged to visit"Did Isaiah 11:6 ever say that the lion will lie down with the lamb?"

Some believe there is a verse in the Bible that says, "God helps those who help themselves." But that doesn't exist in the Bible and there is no verse that says the lamb and the lion will lie down together. However, since there will be peace throughout the millennial kingdom, it will be true that all animals will have peace with one another. The really amazing thing about this passage is that a boy will lead it. Now that's amazing.

Where does the Bible say the lion will lie down with the lamb? - Isaiah 11:6 (2)

The future millennial kingdom is on earth

Isaiah's passages do not describe heaven - they describe Jesus' earthly kingdom. We can see this by reading the verses immediately preceding the passage from Isaiah 65:25.

And no more shall the voice of weeping and the voice of weeping be heard in her.In her there will no longer be a child who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not pass his days; For the young man will die at the age of a hundred, and whoever does not reach it will be considered cursed. And they will build houses and dwell in them; They will also plant vineyards and eat their fruit. They will not build for others to inhabit; they will not plant for others to eat; for like the life of a tree shall be the days of my people, and my chosen shall devour the work of their hands. They will not work in vain and bear children for misfortune; for they are the seed of the blessed of the Lord, and their seed with them. It will also happen that I answer before they call; and while they're still talking I want to hear them. Isaiah 65:19-24 (NIV)

Note that children will be born and older men will die. Revelation 21:1-4 describes heaven. It's a whole different picture.

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth are gone, and the sea is no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride prepared for her husband. And I heard a loud voice saying from the throne: “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and he shall dwell among them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be among them, and he shall cut them off . every tear from your eyes; and there will be no more death; there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping, no more pain; the first things have passed away.” Revelation 21:1-4 (NIV)

Historical records help us understand that the phrase "wolf and lamb" has been used in Isaiah 11:6 since 270 B.C. Those looking for evidence that Isaiah 11:6 already included the phrase "the lion and the lamb" should remember that Christ promised that God's Word would never change (Matthew 5:17-18).

(Video) Isaiah 11:6-9 "The Lion Will Lie Down with the Lamb" May 8, 2020

Do not think that I came to abolish the law or the prophets; I did not come to dissolve, but to fulfill. For I tell you truly, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or dash will pass away from the law until everything is fulfilled. Matthew 5:17-18 (NASB)

We must remember that every word in the Bible was written or inspired by God (2 Timothy 3:16) and the Holy Spirit moved people to write (2 Peter 1:21). This means that Isaiah 11:6 has not changed.

It is also important to note that Isaiah 65:25 also refers to the wolf and the lamb.

The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox; and the dust shall be food for the serpent. In all my holy mountain they shall neither harm nor destroy, says the LORD. Isaiah 65:25 (NIV)

The phrase "the lion and the lamb" is not found in the Bible.

God loves peace. Sin brought war, violence and hatred. One day, when Jesus reigns on this earth, He will bring temporary peace. And those who are alive during that time will see true peace - as only God can give. Lord Jesus, come quickly!
